A new public campaign has been launched by Co-operatives UK called Move Your Money. Based on a similar campaign in the United States, it is aims to encourage people to move their current and savings accounts to co-operative, mutual and ethical providers – specifically, credit unions, building societies and The Co-operative Bank.
As an organisation with a mission to grow the co-operative economy and a wide membership base that will benefit from the campaign, Co-operatives UK is naturally and openly supportive of the aims of Move your Money. The Co-operatives UK Board at its meeting in December discussed the plans for the Move Your Money campaign and added their support for this into their agreed Operating Plan for 2012, the International Year of Co-operatives.
The campaign is being organised by activists from outside the established co-operative sector. Co-operatives UK therefore has been bridging the gap between the campaigners and their relevant members, to ensure that they have opportunities to be briefed – including The Co-operative Bank, the Association of British Credit Unions, Community Development Finance Association and the Building Societies Association.
It is worth saying that Co-operatives UK have a wide diversity of members and what is said as Co-operatives UK on public issues like this are not binding on any of the members. Even so, although there are no guarantees, we anticipate the campaign may gain profile and over time be of benefit to the co-operative sector.
The campaign website is now live - http://moveyourmoney.org.uk/ calling March ‘move your money month’.
